Giuseppe Penone

The last time I was in Tate Modern, in 2011, I took a photograph of a Giuseppe Penone work. I could see, as perhaps non-woodies couldn’t, just how it had been produced, and this made it all the more wonderful for me. Here’s the image I took on the day…

Not a very clear shot, but it’s a difficult place to take a photograph.

Knowing how he achieved this wonderful sculpture is one thing, but seeing a photograph today of him working on one was incredible.

I just hope that isn’t Oak!

I guess that answers one question

Early in his career, Bruce Nauman came to the conclusion that, “If I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art. At this point art became more of an activity and less of a product.”

Crucible: turned sycamore hollowform vessel mounted on a turned burr oak base. Blue spirit stains and ebonising. Made as a reaction to a question about woodturners and art. A little cynical perhaps but the result was pleasing.
